THANKS A TON FOR TAKING THE TIME TO HAVE A CHAT WITH US, GUYS. WE’RE STOKED THAT WE GET THE CHANCE TO CATCH UP WITH YOU! FOR OUR READERS THAT MIGHT NOT BE AWARE OF YOU, COULD YOU GIVE US AN ELEVATOR PITCH AND WHAT WAS THE MAIN INSPIRATION BEHIND STARTING THE MIGHTY GUTRECTOMY?
Thanks for having us, it’s a pleasure!
Gutrectomy was founded in 2011 in Southern Germany. Our goal is to create the hardest blend of Slam, Hardcore/Beatdown, and Deathcore plus all the influences of every band member. So far we released two EPs (Slamageddon, 2014; Slaughter The Innocent, 2020), one full-length (Slampocalypse, 2017), and one single (Filius Mulieris Meretricis, 2019).
WHAT HAS BEEN THE HIGHLIGHTS IN THE BAND’S CAREER SO FAR?
Back in 2018, we were on the road with a self-organized, headlining tour through Europe along with Mental Cruelty and Cannibal Grandpa. That was a truly unique experience and with lots of great memories for all of us.
Otherwise of course we played a bunch of great festivals like Party. San Open Air 2018, 2x Fall in the Brawl, 2x Death Feast Open Air, and many others, which also is a highlight every time.
HOW IMPORTANT IS MERCHANDISE TO A BAND LIKE YOU?
Especially during the corona pandemic, merchandise is the only way we can raise the money that we need for further production of our music, videos, or new merch. So it’s an absolute must-have.
But apart from the money aspect, it means the world to us when we see people in the crowd wearing our merch! 🥰
SO, I’VE CHECKED OUT ‘SLAUGHTER THE INNOCENT’ AND I’VE GOT TO SAY IT’S ONE OF THE BEST SLAM/DEATHCORE RELEASES I’VE HEARD THIS YEAR SO FAR! FOR EVERYONE READING THAT’S INTO THE HEAVIER SIDE OF THINGS, CHECK IT OUT HERE! COULD YOU RUN US THROUGH THE WRITING AND RECORDING PROCESS OF THE EP? AS WELL AS HOW THE BAND WENT ABOUT MARKETING THE RELEASE?
Thank you very much, we’re glad you like the EP!
As we’re living a little further apart and couldn’t see each other every week, most of the time our bassist Louis came up with a raw version of a track, and then we built it up together online.
Unfortunately, we also had a line-up change during the writing/recording process, because our ex-drummer left the band. That really was a setback for all of us, but our new drummer Simon really did a great job on the new record and also learned all the older songs for the live shows in a few weeks.
We did all the recording by ourselves at home and then gave it to Manuel from Überlärm Studios for mixing and mastering. We already worked with him for our single “Filius Mulieris Meretricis” and we were super happy how it turned out back then, so it was an easy decision for us to work with him again.
Regarding the marketing, we produced a mix of playthrough and fun video for the whole EP and released it exclusively through the Slam Worldwide YouTube channel (check it out here!).
Also, we released the same-named single “Slaughter The Innocent” along with a motion video some months prior to the EP release, to give a brief insight on how the new material is sounding. It was really exciting and interesting how the people reacted to it, as our style changed a little bit more deathcore with this release.
Overall the release went slightly different than we planned because of lots of smaller issues that were out of our hands, but in our opinion, it turned out pretty good nonetheless.
WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE BANDS THAT ARE STARTING OUT?
Just have fun, don’t take yourself too seriously, and rather drink one peppermint liqueur too much than too little!
THE GLOBAL PANDEMIC HAD A WAY BIGGER ON THE MUSIC SCENE THAN WE ANTICIPATED. WHAT DID YOU LEARN AS A BAND FROM THIS CRISIS? DID THE RELEASE OF THE EP HAVE A CONNECTION TO THIS?
We only played 2 smaller shows in 2020, so we really learned how valuable live shows are for us as a band but also as guests. The EP was already finished before the beginning of the corona pandemic, but because of the whole situation taking place we couldn’t promote the new material on stage and also had no release show 😢
WITH TOURING PICKING UP HOPEFULLY BY 2021, DO YOU HAVE ANY TIPS/NECESSITIES THAT IS A MUST FOR BEING ON THE ROAD?
Instruments, songs, and peppermint liqueur (we really love that stuff)! Also a lot of toilet paper for the next morning.
